Wilfred Gregory William Hansford was born at Deptford, Surrey on 24 May 1896, the son of William and Harriet Hansford. The family had moved to Limehouse by 1911 and when it became time for Hansford to enlist he did so in Holborn, attesting for the 2nd Battalion (London Welsh), Royal Welch Fusiliers on 19 May 1915. Transferred to the 18th Battalion the next day he remained with this unit until being posted to 14th Battalion in France on 23 December 1915.

Joining the war in France on 24 December he reached his unit on 25 January 1916. Hansford went missing during the Battle of the Somme while his Battalion was engaged in the fighting around Mametz on 9 July 1916. A note from his commanding officer in his records made on 28 October states that he was wounded/missing between 9-12 July 1916. His M.I.C. notes that his medals were issued on 7 July 1937 to his brother. Hansford is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with a file of copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details and service records.
