Joseph Lewins Wilkinson was born at Marley Hill, Sunniside, Durham, on 14 November 1893, the son of William and Mary Wilkinson, of 3 Cuthbert, St. Marley Hill, Newcastle. He was still living at that address in 1911 while working as a General Labourer in a Coal Mine. Enlisting with the 11th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers he entered the war in France on 5 October 1915 and served there until his death. During the First Day of the Somme the 11th Battalion were engaged around Thiepval Wood, here they came under heavy machine gun fire and suffered an estimated 600 casualties. Wilkinson was listed as missing presumed dead after the attack. He is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial and the Marley Hill and District Memorial, Durham; sold together with a copied extract from the War Diary of the 11th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, Commonwealth War Graves details and details of the Marley Hill and District War Memorial along with a copied M.I.C. and letter from Regimental Museum providing details of the recipient's service.
