Richard Albert Darby was born at 28 Goodwin Street, Derby on 9 May 1898 the son of James and Mary Darby of 1 Suez Street, New Basford, Nottingham. Enlisting at Nottingham, Darby served in France with 17th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), later transferring to 9th Battalion. He was killed on 16 July 1917 and buried at Essex Farm Cemetery; sold together with copied Commonwealth War Graves details.
