Three: Private C. Keenan, 'D' Company, 1st Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), who was killed in action during the attack on La Boisselle on 5 July 1916

Charles Keenan was born at Derby, Derbyshire on January 1888, the son of Micheal and Ada Keenan of 17 Chapel Street, Derby. Enlisting at Nottingham with the 1th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He entered the war in France on 4 November 1914 with 'A' and 'C' Companies joining the trenches around Neuve Chappelle on 15 November. Keenan took part in the attack on La Boisselle made by 23rd Division on 5 July 1916, in which they faced heavy close-quarters fighting. 'D' Company managed to secure its objectives but a lack of progress from the rest of the Division left it exposed and forced a withdrawal. Keenan was killed during the engagement and is buried in the Ovillers Military Cemetery; sold together with copied research including M.I.C., Commonwealth War Graves details, extracts from British Battalions in France and Belgium 1914-1917, 1901 census details as well as handwritten research on the recipient.
