British War and Victory Medals (4527 Pte. F. Ferguson. Sco. H.); Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque (Frederick Ferguson), contact marks, very fine (3)

Frederick Ferguson was born at King's Lynn, Norfolk in 1863, the son of Graham and Sarah Ferguson. Ferguson's father was originally from Dundee and by 1871 the family had returned there, hence it was here that he entered his pre-war profession as a tailor. Enlisting with the 1st Battalion, Scottish Horse at Cupar he served during the Great War on Gallipoli from 7 November 1915 after the Battalion had entered the fighting dismounted in the Suvla Bay sector. Evacuated in December 1915 they were transferred to Egypt being absorbed into the Suez Defences. At this stage Ferguson began to serve attached to the 2nd Battalion, Imperial Camel Corps, a formation initially formed from British Yeomanry Regiments to help in the fight against the Senussi but later expanded to a four-Battalion Regiment for fighting in Palestine. Ferguson died of wounds on 12 January 1917, possibly sustained at the Battle of Rafa on 9 January in which the Camel Corps played a notable roll. He is buried in the Kantara War Cemetery, Egypt.
