Cedric Lloyd Graham Hill was born at 2 May 1893 at Charlton, Kent, the son of Graham and Minnie Hill of 22 Carlton Avenue, Kenton, Middlesex. Having served in the School Corps with the rank of Sergeant he joined the Honourable Artillery Company on 24 August 1914 with the rank of Private. Serving in France from 29 December 1914, Hill would have served in the First Battle of Ypres. He was wounded three times while fighting here, with his medical records noting a scalp wound on 13 February 1915 which was treated by No. 7 Field Ambulance. Later and far more seriously he suffered gunshot wound to the left shoulder on 15 June 1915, he was treated at 18 General Hospital but later transferred to England on a hospital ship on 1 July 1915.
After his recovery Hill re-joined the Honourable Artillery Company, however in September of that year he was Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and posted to 5th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry. Returning to France in October 1916 he was transferred to 8th (Service) Battalion and took part in the attack on Butte de Warlencourt during the later days of the Battle of the Somme. During the fighting the 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry were caught in the open by both British and German artillery as well as heavy machine gun fire. Their advance on Butte Trench faltered and they were forced back to Snag Trench leaving their dead and wounded behind. It was here that Hill was killed, he is commemorated upon the Thiepval memorial; sold together with copied research including service records, commission documents, photographs and extracts relating to his career as well as M.I.C. and Commonwealth War Graves details.
