Fred W. Farnworth was born at Tyldesley, Manchester in 1898, the son of Thomas and Margret Farnworth of 20 Lord Street, Hindsford, Atherton. He is listed on the 1911 census working as a Little Piecer before enlisting on 19 November 1914 with the Manchester Regiment. Serving in France from 26 July 1916 he was first posted to the 5th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool) Regiment but later transferred to the 18th Battalion, Manchester Regiment on 20 September 1916. Serving with this Regiment on 12 October 1916 Farnworth was involved in an assault on the German position named 'Bayonet Trench' outside Bapaume. The garrison of German Marines proved to be tougher than anticipated and losses soon mounted: of the 350 men of 18th Manchester Regiment who had taken part in the attack 250 were killed, wounded or missing. Farnworth was among those wounded - he had suffered a gunshot wound to the back and was taken to Number 5 General Hospital in Rouen, but did not survive his injuries. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Roun; sold together with copied research including service records, M.I.C., census extracts and Commonwealth War Graves details.
