Pair: 2nd Lieutenant E. N. Chadwick, 3rd Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, who was killed in action on 4 October 1917 at Broodseinde
British War and Victory Medals (2. Lieut. E. N. Chadwick.), good very fine (2)
Edward Neal Chadwick was born in 1893, the son of Albert and Alice Chadwick of Mount Pleasant, Gee Cross, Cheshire. Educated at Hyde Grammar School he joined his father’s firm before attesting as a Private in December 1915. Attending courses at Glasgow and Aldershot he served as a Sergeant Instructor before being commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in January 1917 and was sent to Flanders on 12 May that year. The Battalion took part in the Battle of Broodseinde, Ypres on 4 October 1917, launching an attack at 06:00hrs through a marsh. The poor ground caused them to lose alignment with the units of either side which caused much confusion: the loss of co-ordination caused the leading rank to advance too far and become caught up in the creeping barrage intended to cover their assault. Confused fighting began throughout Kangaroo Trench and up Beek Street Trench and astonishingly, despite the impossibility of co-ordinating the assault, they managed to take several of their objectives. Chadwick was killed during the fighting and is remembered upon the Tyne Cot Memorial; sold together with copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, M.I.C. and an article concerning the recipient along with an extract from the Battalion War Diary for 4 October 1917.
