Cecil Magnus Bellis was baptised at Tranmere,Cheshire on 20 June 1886 and by 1911 was an Office Boy in the offices of Minoprio & Co., Cotton Traders. During the Great War he served as a Sergeant (No. 1440) in the 1/4th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment before being commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 9 July 1916, whilst attached to the 13th Battalion and is buried in the Corbie Communal Cemetery, France. The 13th Battalion had gone 'over the top' to attack La Boiselle at 0805hrs on 7 July, taking massive losses of 18 Officers and 243 Other Ranks killed and wounded. After his death and that of several comrades, the flag of the Liverpool Cotton Exchange was flown at half-mast on 12 July 1916 in their memory.
