Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr was born at Cape Town, South Africa on 18 December 1889, the son of Jan and Fanny Hofmeyr of Cape Town. Notably the roll for the Burghersdorp Town Guard contains a J. H. Hofmeyr, possibly his father. Young Hofmeyr enlisted with the King's Royal Rifle Corps with the rank of Private in September 1915. Applying for a commission in January 1917, Hofmeyr was successful on 25 May 1917 and appointed to 1st/8th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Debryshire Regiment). It was at this stage that his brother Robert Ernest Murray Hofmeyr was killed while serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Yorkshire Regiment. Jan Hofmeyr was killed in action on 27 October 1917 and is buried in the Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe; sold together with M.I.C., Commonwealth War Graves details and photographs of his grave and the memorial to his brother.
