Harold Hawke Beer was born on 1 December 1891 at Plymouth and was a horse driver by trade upon his joining the Royal Navy on December 1912. He joined Thunderer on 1 March 1914, upon which his Service Record records him as serving until September 1919. At the Battle of Jutland she was under the command of Captain James Fergusson and was the eighth ship from the head of the battle line after deployment. During the Battle she fired thirty-seven 13.5-inch shells.
It appears at some point he may have been lent to the Submarine Service, his Record noting 'Special Trace', besides the Lot being accompanied by the following objects:
(i)
War art, probably from a shell, shaped into a cross, the base impressed '1917 Sub G12', approx. 750mm in height.
(ii)
A wall plaque, with a model of a submarine and engraved 'H.M. Submarine G12'.
