Alfred Ernest Cottle was born in 1879 at Blackfriars, Middlesex. Attesting for the militia with 5th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers on 30 June 1897 whilst working as a Telegraph Messenger at Battersea Post Office. Having enlisted he drilled for a total of 49 days but the next year was listed as temporarily unfit. Returning to duty in 1899 he was to remain with the battalion for another year before transferring to the 18th Hussars on 2 May 1900. Joining his regiment, Cottle went on to serve widely during the guerrilla phase of the war in which the 18th were employed in sweeps for lurking Boer Commandos or as part of columns advancing on vital targets. He survived the war and returned to Jersey, leaving the military and working as a cook.

Cottle re-joined the military on the outbreak of the Great War, enlisting with the Royal Horse Artillery and entering the war in the Mesopotamian Theatre on 17 August 1915. He served in this capacity for the duration of the war.
