Great War Bronze Memorial Plaque (Ernest Washington Sewell), nearly extremely fine
Ernest Washington Sewell was born at Liverpool on 9 June 1888, the son of William and Hannah Sewell of 29 South Station Street, Cadoxton, Barry, Glamorgan. Strangely Sewell is noted in the 1911 census as serving with the 1st Battalion, Welsh Regiment in Egypt although later documents suggest this may not have been the case. Sewell married Florence Margret Leah Morse of 21 Commercial Road, Cadoxton on 31 May 1912. Attesting with the 13th Battalion (1st North Wales), Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 7 June 1915 his previous professions are listed as profession as Butcher and Labourer and it is declared that he had at no time served in the military. He was promoted Corporal on 31 July 1915 and again advanced Lance-Sergeant on 8 May 1916. Sewell served in France from 4 July 1916 with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers only to be killed the next month during a failed attack upon the western edge of High Wood on 21 August 1916. He is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial and Barry Memorial; sold together with a typed biographical note.
