1896 (29 Feb.) S.S. "Ailsa", collided with S.S. "a Bourgogne" in New York harbour en route to Jamaica, envelope (stamps floated off) from New York to Jamaica bearing, on reverse, label inscribed "This article of Mail has been recovered from the wreck of S.S. Ailsa" which sunk in New York Harbour on 29th February 1896" issued by the Postmaster-General of Jamaica, George H. Pearce, tied by Kingston c.d.s. Photo
Note: George Pearce was aboard "Ailsa" at the time of collision, possibly the only instance where a postmaster, who was involved in a shipwreck, was also involved in processing the mail salvaged from the wreck.
