Auction: 22018 - The Klempka Family Collection of Great Britain - Part One
Lot: 44

Great Britain
1840 Mulready
May Dates
2nd May: 1d. envelope, A 178, turned and posted from London to Penzance, cancelled by superb strike of "c/paid/2 my 2/1840" tombstone datestamp in red, alongside is a very faint "strand b/1d.paid" postmark in black and "Pd" ink manuscript. One of the interior flaps has pencil notation: "Sent to show Mrs. Day how certain Islanders propose to use the stamps in order that their letters may go free. May 1". Vertical creasing and fold splits no detracting the appearance. An incredibly rare and most unusual usage. R.P.S. Certificate (2022). S.G. ME2, £25,000. Photo
