1st May: 1d. lettersheet, A69, addressed to Worcester pre-paid in cash and cancelled by neat red tombstone Paid datestamp for "1 MAY 1840", alongside "P.O Strand/1py.P.Paid" straight-line postmark; there are a few faults including soiling and repairing nevertheless a very rare item being one of only four Mulready lettersheets recorded used on the 1st of May (one is in the Postal Museum). The Mulready envelopes and lettersheets were issued to the public on 1st May 1840, but were not valid for postage until the 6th May. All examples used before the 6th May should either be prepaid or have the postage due paid by the recipient
