Postal History
1782 (28 Feb.) entire letter endorsed on the front "1 paid" and on reverse, opening wonderfully for display a superb strike of Williamson's unofficial Edinburgh post "e . penny post not paid*" overstruck in the centre with "paid" (which explains the manuscript endorsement "1 paid" on the front); filing folds but fine. The only recorded example of the "paid" stamp struck across the "unpaid" mark. A highly important Scottish postal history rarity. Photo .

Note:: In "Scottish Postmarks"(1981), the author, James Mackay states"... a major rarity is the simple word "paid" on its own .... even rarer is the "paid" stamp struck in the centre of an unpaid stamp".
