Postal History
1646 (16 March) entire letter from London to Darby (sic), " Presente these & my service to the most vertuous Lady the Lady Aston at Sir Henry Willoughby his house at Rizley in Darbyshire / Leave these at Mr Theckestones house at the three tonnes to bee sent as above directed/Darby/Post Payed 6d"; a private letter from J. Bridgeman concerning an annuity given by Sir Thomas Ashton (1600-1645), who commanded the Royalist forces at Middlewich in 1643. Extraordinarily rare during the mid - 1640's period. Outstandingly clear and legible. Photo
Note: The endorsement "poste payed 6d." would appear to be the incorrect rate as per the 1635 scale for 140 miles. The route would have been on the Chester Road to Towcaster, then on to the Sheffield Road.
