Note: On 24 December 1850 the Xhosa ambushed Colonel MacKinnon in Boompah Pass. By that time, British action was causing significant and constant harm to Xhosa communities. The war lasted two years. In February 1853, Sandile and the other Xhosa chiefs surrendered.
