Note: The War of the Axe broke out in early 1846 when Xhosa raiders attacked and killed a Khoi who was escorting a Xhosa chief to Grahamstown to stand trial for stealing an axe. The war lasted 21 months until the capture of Xhosa chief Sandile. Burgher forces got involved when General Somerset aked for their help.
