Prince Charles and Prince Henry, Legitimacy of the Jacobite Succession, AR Medal, undated [c. 1731], by O. ALTER • AB • ILLO, draped and armoured bust left, DIE • XXXI • DECEMBR • MDCCXX • EXTVLIT • OS • SACRVM • COELO (star) on edge, 41mm, 38.16g (Eimer 521; MI ii 492/34; Woolf 43.1; Harding 60 this medal), bruise to obverse edge at 5 o'clock and some very faint contact marks to surfaces, otherwise with a most attractive lustre to dark grey surfaces and attractive purple toning, handsomely struck up, extremely fine

The two Princes here represented were the grandchildren of James II, Prince Charles, the Young Pretender, and Prince Henry, afterwards Cardinal of York. The star suggests Charles' princely origin. The obverse legend, 'He shines in the midst of all' alludes to the problems faced by the House of Stuart. The reverse legend 'The next after him' emphasises the secure prospects of a Stuart succession. The medals were probably struck as presents for adherents to the Stuart cause.



This medal is also believed to be the prompt which lead George II to produce the medal of his family, symbolising the future of the Hanoverian bloodline, in 1732.
