PROVIDENTIA OBSTETRIX, Providence, leaning against a column, indicates to an infant in her arms the territories of Britain and Ireland, CAROLO • PRINC : VALLIAE NAT: DIE • VLTIMA A : MDCCXX • in exergue in three lines, plain edge, 41mm, 36.22g (Eimer 488; MI ii 452/60; Woolf 38.1; Harding 57 this medal), some hairline scratches to obverse field, otherwise with attractive dark grey surfaces, lustrous and cabinet toned, the highpoints all pleasingly detailed, good extremely fine

James and Clementina met for the first time early in September 1719. The Marriage ceremony was performed on their first evening together. Prince, Charles, later to be known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, was born on the last day of 1720. This event was marked by the issue of a medal, engraved by Ermenegildo Hamerani. The obverse carries a conventional double portrait, the reverse a figure of Providence and an infant, an obvious allusion to the 'rights' of the infant Prince.
