When Clementina finally arrived at Bologna, after escaping imprisonment, James had already left for Spain in a vain attempt to raise funds for another invasion of Britain. She was married by proxy with James Murray standing in for the Prince. After the ceremony Clementina left for Rome where she stayed at the Ursuline convent whilst waiting for Prince James to return from Spain. This medal is not dated but was probably struck on the occasion of the proxy marriage, although this is not entirely clear.
