Charles I (1625-1649), Civil War Issues, Sir Thomas Glemham's Emergency Coinage for the King's Garrison at Carlisle Castle (27 October 1644 - 25 June 1645), Obsidional Shilling, 13 May - 25 June 1645, : C : R : crowned, XII below, within linear circle, cross on top of crown breaks circle, border of dots surrounding, plain crown band, eight pellet jewels on upper arches, two pellets in within crown arches, rev. • OBS : | •: CARL :• | •1645• in three lines, extra short line above S and L, pierced rosette above and below, linear circle and border of dots surrounding, 4.94g, 10h (Nelson [BNJ, 1905], no. 3, Fig 6; Hird 244; Brooker 1220 same dies; North 2635; Spink 3138), on an elliptical flan and softly struck in parts as usual for issue, the die breaks materialising above CARL, otherwise strictly good fine / fine, but very rare, an iconic and highly sought after rarity from the dying embers of the English Civil War

Meticulous record keeping by Leslie Tullie, a besieged inhabitant confirms that £323 would be coined for release about the 30 May 1645. Nelson has guestimated that 1,000 three-shillings were coined and 3,460 shillings. Sir Thomas Glemham would forfeit his own candlesticks to the cause, adding 44 ounces to the pot.
