(x) The Jean-Marie Vanmeerbeeck Collection of Numismatic Portraits from Medieval Flanders and Tudor England | Philip and Mary (1553-1554), Shilling, Tower, PHILIP • ET • MARIA • D • G • R • ANG • FR • NEAP • PR • HISP • busts vis-a-vis, crown above, no date, rev. • POSVIMS • DEVM • ADIVTOREM • NOSTRVM • [sic], crowned oval shield, dividing X-II, 6.33g [97.6grns], 11h, no m.m. (G R Francis, BNJ 1921-22, pp. 349; North 1967; Spink 2498), a trace of doubling to Philip's portrait and softness to extremities, otherwise a truly 'splendid' shilling, the portaits phenomenally bold for this notoriously weak type, the fields richly accentuated by age-old cabinet toning, approaching extremely fine for issue, extremely rare thus and an evident superior even to the record breaking Lockett specimen sold in these rooms in March 2011
