Three: Able Seaman R. Bates, Royal Navy, who saw service as a Boy Class I aboard H.M.S Ajax at Jutland and Courageous at the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight

Richard Bates was born at Chelsea, London on 11 December 1899 and enlisted as a Boy Class II on 13 May 1915 at Ganges. His first posting afloat was the King George V class Battleship Ajax on 26 January 1916. He served with her throughout the Battle of Jutland during which Ajax led the British line.

Reaching his majority after the battle Bates was appointed Ordinary Seaman aboard H.M.S. Courageous on 11 December 1917, only a few weeks after her participation in the Second Battle in Heligoland Bight. Promoted Able Seaman on 14 March 1918 he was posted to H.M.S. Leonidas after the war and remained with the Royal Navy until 2 August 1928, seeing service with such vessels as Tomahawk, Vindictive and Bee. He was finally discharged from H.M.S. Ganges on 2 August 1928; sold together with copied service papers.
