Fred Noble was born in 1899 and was a native of Borrowby, Thirsk. He served in France with the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards and was killed in action on 31 July 1917 at the Battle of Passchendaele. The Guards Brigade were to attack Boesinghe towards enemy positions on Pilckem Ridge. Leaving their trenches shortly after 0350hrs after an artillery barrage which had lasted day, they were in the second wave of the attack and by 0600hrs had made their objectives, some 1000 yards being taken. Continuing to push beyond the Black Line and up unto the Green Line. However, a number of enemy machine-guns remained active and were causing great loss to the unit. It was at this point that Private Whitham went from shell-hole to shell-hole and eventually took out and captured that very machine-gun, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
In the action some 42 men, Noble included lost their lives. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated upon the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
