Joseph John Honeyball was born at St. Andrews, Stockwell, London in 1895 and worked as a Barristers Clerk prior to enlisting on 14 September 1914. Embarking for France on 16 March 1915 he arrived at the front with his Battalion on 6 May. Family legend has it that he met his future wife (the daughter of Brigadier-General F.G.L. Lamotte) whilst seeking medical treatment - certainly an unusual match for the time. Honeyball was hospitalised twice, one on 30 September 1915 as a result of boils and once on 8 March 1916 with inflammation of the connective tissue in his ankle.
At the front with his Battalion on 19 March 1917, at Vaux Wood he was taken prisoner and sent to Lumberg Camp - from where he was repatriated on 29 November 1918; sold together with copied service papers.
For the Medals of his father-in-law, please see Lot 438.
