Cecil John Lee was born at Worth, Sussex on 3 December 1898 and enlisted with the Royal Navy on 16 February 1915 with H.M.S. Ganges. Posted to H.M.S. Monarch with on 30 May he was still with this vessel during the Battle of Jutland. As part of the 2nd Battlecruiser Squadron Monarch was further from the fighting than many other battlecruisers however she was still well engaged firing 53 13.5 inch shells. Lee was still ranked as Boy Class I during the Battle but only two days later on 3 June 1916 he reached his majority and was appointed Ordinary Seaman.

His capacity had clearly impressed his superiors as he was promoted Able Seaman that same year on 3 December 1916. He served with Monarch for the entire war, returning ashore on 30 June 1919 before being posted to H.M.S. Colombo several months later on 20 November. Lee was to serve for another decade aboard a variety of ships, notably Iron Duke, Vortigern and Whitley. He was discharged ashore on 3 December 1928; sold together with copied service papers.
