William Green was born at Barton, Lincoln in 1813 and joined the 10th (North Lincoln) Regiment of Foot on 29 June 1833. He saw a good deal of service in Britain but was posted to India in time for the First Anglo-Sikh War where he was present for the Battle of Sobraon. Here the 10th Foot were part of Stacy's Brigade in General Dick's Division on the left flank. Their attack was under cover of feints from the rest of the line - however, it later proved inadequate and the Sikh forces were able to drive them back with heavy losses. The troops making the feint attacks redoubled their efforts and Dick's Division, including the 10th, reformed at attacked again. This time they met with greater success and along with success from Gilbert's Division on the right and an encircling move by the 3rd Light Dragoons pushed the Khalsa back over the river. With the defeat of the Sikhs at Sobraon the 10th were part of the Army which marched on Lahore to end the conflict.

Green remained with the battalion in India after the war and was present there for the outbreak of the Second Anglo-Sikh War. The 10th Regiment was part of General Whish's army which advanced upon Multan to relieve Herbert Edwardes' forces in the siege. During the fighting Green was seriously wounded in the left knee by a matchlock ball. This injury prevented him from taking any further part in the campaign and, after examination by the Medical Board resulted in his being invalided on 13 August 1850 at Chatham; sold together with copied research including medal rolls, casualty rolls and newspaper cuttings as well as service papers and typed research.
