(x) East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, Juba River 1893 (L. Barber, Gunr R.N., H.M.S. Blanche.), nearly extremely fine and rare

45 'Juba River 1893' clasps issued.

L. Barber is confirmed upon the Roll with entitlement to this Medal and Clasp, it being sent to him in September 1895 aboard H.M.S Cambridge, the gunnery ship off Plymouth.

This clasp was authorised to the crew of the Blanche, for this small expedition against the Somalis of Jubaland, the objective being to rescue one Captain Tritton and a Mr. McDougall from mutinous locally-raised troops who had them surrounded aboard the steamer Kenia. After rescuing the two men the Naval force, steaming up-river on the Kenia, carried out a number of attacks on nearby towns and villages as 'retribution' for the uprising and murder of Mr. W.G. Hamilton ('Superintendent in Charge of Askaris'), before withdrawing back down to the coast.
