South Africa 1834-53 (A. Allibone 73rd Regt.), suspension slack, some contact marks, contact wear and edge bruising, overall nearly very fine

Anthony Allibone was born at Pattiston Hersey, Warwickshire in 1823 the son of Mark and Elizabeth Allibone. Attesting for the 73rd Regiment on 29 November 1841 he was posted to South Africa in 1850. Allibone served with the regiment there during the 8th Xhosa War, in which the British fought a fierce guerrilla war against the Xhosa tribes. The main duties at this time were garrisoning settlements or attempting to drive the enemy from their mountain strongholds. Allibone remained on the Cape for eight years and seven months, being appointed Corporal on 24 February 1846. This was not to last however and he was imprisoned the next month (23 March), additionally being demoted back to Private. Posted to India, he was to serve for another three years and five months, still being there on the outbreak of the Indian Mutiny where the Regiment saw action in Central India. Allibone survived and was discharged at Chichester on 12 March 1863 where he listed his intended place of residence as the King's Inn, Warwick; sold together with typed research and copied research including service papers, medal rolls and census data.
