(x) South Africa 1834-53 (H. Harper. Quarter Master.), good very fine
Henry Harper appears on the Roll as Quartermaster of H.M.S. Castor, a 36-gun frigate launched on 2 May 1832. Castor saw service at the bombardment of St. Jean d'Acre (2 November 1840), and in New Zealand during the 'Flagstaff War' (11 March 1845 - 11 January 1846), during which time several members of the ship's company were killed at the Siege of Ruapekapeka.
In 1852 Castor was on the Cape of Good Hope Station and came to the assistance of the survivors of H.M. Troopship Birkenhead when the latter sank during that terrible tragedy on the morning of 26 February 1852.
