Military General Service 1793-1814, 3 clasps, Vimiera, Fuentes d'Onor, Salamanca (R. E. Broughton. Lieut. 9th Foot), medal contained in a silver-rimmed frame, this with the recipient's details privately engraved upon it, glazed with lunettes and fitted with a silver ring and swivel suspension, the reverse lunette missing, obverse nearly extremely fine, reverse good very fine

Robert Edward Broughton was born in 1781, the second son of the Reverend Thomas Broughton, of Bristol and is confirmed on the Medal Roll as a Lieutenant in the 9th (East Norfolk) Regiment of Foot with entitlement to these three clasps. Noted as being appointed Ensign in the 9th Foot on 20 October 1807, Broughton previously served as a Captain in the 2nd Somerset Militia (Edinburgh Gazette, No. 1495, p.722 refers). Serving with the 9th early in the Peninsular War, in July 1812 he purchased a captaincy in the 3rd (Buffs) Regiment of Foot (The Royal Military Chronicle, Vol. IV, p.323 refers) but then exchanged back into the 9th a year later (Edinburgh Gazette, November 20 1813, No. 2129 refers).
