Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Java (J. Johnson, Serjt 69th Foot.), edge bruise, minor contact marks, very fine

Joseph Johnson was born at Torksay, Lincolnshire in 1788 and enlisted with the 69th (South Lincolnshire) Regiment of Foot on 23 May 1806 at Limerick, Ireland. Posted to the East Indies on 28 June 1808 he was here during the campaigns in which his unit waged against French and Dutch-held islands in the east between 1810-11 which culminated in the capture of Java.

They saw heavy fighting in the Battle of Cornelis in which the Battalion Commander, Lieutenant-Colonel McLeod, was killed. Johnson survived the action and went on to see further service out east. Returning home on 24 February 1826 he was discharged on 3 November 1827 as physically unfit to keep serving; sold together with copied research including discharge papers, medal rolls and an extract from British War Medals.
