(x) U.S.A.: Standard Oil Company, certificate for 100 shares of $100, 187[3], #178, issued to Oliver Hazard Payne and signed by him on the reverse. Handsigned by John D.Rockefeller as President and H.M. Flagler as Secretary. Previously unseen type II certificate with capital stated as $2.500,000 with block for duty stamp at left (none affixed). Ink cancelled across face and through signatures. Established by John D Rockefeller and Henry Flagler in 1870, with William Rockefeller as an executive, Standard Oil was the largest oil refiner of its time, and formed a monopoly within the industry that lasted until 1911 when the trust dissolved into smaller companies, making Rockefeller the richest man in history. Although it was well known that the Standard Oil Company increased its capital from the original to $2,500,000 it was not known whether certificates were printed with this increase - until now. Oliver Hazard Payne is considered the 24th wealthiest American in history. He invested in iron and oil refining after the civil war where he attained the rank of Brigadier General in 1865. He became a key figure in Standard Oil after his oil interests were acquired and was one of the earliest shareholders. He was one of 9 trsustees appointed on the formation of the Standard Oil Trust which acquired all the shares in the numerous Standard Oil companies that existed in various states. Lightly toned, VF and extremely rare.
