Gajpat Singh was a descendant of the Phulkian Misl, one of the 12 confederacies of the Sikhs in the late 18th century. He took part in the attack of the Sikhs on Sirhind province in 1763, in which the Aghan governor was killed. Gajpat Singh subsequently occupied as large tract of the country, including Jind and Safidon. In 1772, the Mughal Emperor, Shah 'Alam II conferred on him the title of Raja and be began to rule as an independent prince, and to coin his own money.
