Anglo-Uruguayan Farming, Estancia & Properties Company Ltd (1903-1972), AR Good Service Medal, London, c. 1934-1941, harbour vista, rev. ESTANCIA AND PROPERTIES COMPANY LTD, Progreso Prudencia Paciencia Unidad, 12.78g, neatly engraved, very fine and unusual, unnamed as issued

In the early years of the 20th Century, investment from British companies in South America was extensive to exploit the lucrative cattle ranching industry. The formation of these so-called 'Estancias' reached their zenith in the 1920s and 1930s when Sir Eugene Millington-Drake, British Minister to Uruguay encouraged such companies to issue medals such as these to recognise the sacrifices made by their British staff now working many thousands of miles away from home. Company records indicate Mr Charles Jewell of Bellavista, Silverdale Road, Eastbourne was the Chairman and Managing Director of the company in September 1922.
