Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (K. 6120 W. S. Lavis. S.P.O. H.M.S. Woolwich.), minor verdigris overall, contact marks, nearly very fine
Walter Samuel Lavis was born on 10 June 1891 at Plymouth, Devon where he worked as a Butcher’s Assistant prior to enlisting as a Stoker Class II on 4 April 1910 at Vivid II. Promoted Stoker Class I on 8 May 1911 he served on a number of vessels in the run up the Great War including Argyll and Cornwallis. During the war he served mainly aboard shore establishments or in the depot ship Leander aboard which he was advanced Leading Stoker on 16 March 1916. Promoted Stoker Petty-Officer on 1 July 1918 while serving ashore at Vivid II. Lavis continued to serve with the Royal Navy after the war being awarded the L.S. & G.C. while with the depot ship Woolwich which he served aboard from 26 April 1924-31 December 1925. He remained with Shore Establishments until he was Shore Pensioned on 3 April 1932.
