Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R. (Ben. Blake, Pte. No. 3274 Ply. R.M.L.I.), minor contact marks and slight edge bruise, very fine

Benjamin Blake was born on 23 November 1856. Enlisting at Bristol on 23 October 1875 with the rank of Private in the Royal Marine Light Infantry. Remaining ashore at Portsmouth for several years, Blake first went to sea aboard H.M.S. Duke of Wellington from 23 August 1877 while she was flagship of the Port Admiral at Portsmouth. His first overseas service was with H.M.S. Inconstant when she was recommissioned in 1880, he joined the vessel on 20 February 1880 and left her on 30 June for H.M.S. Alexandra. Blake was serving with this ship for the Bombardment of Alexandria at the opening of the Anglo-Egyptian War. He must have participated further in the conflict as he was soon transferred to the S.S. Bokhara a steamship which served as a troop transport during the Mahdist War. Blake is listed as attached to the vessel from 6 August 1884-17 August 1884 from there he went ashore serving with H.M.S. Indus from 1 October 1884-30 September 1887 and later with the Plymouth Division, being awarded his L.S. & G.C. there on 4 February 1888. Promoted Corporal there on 1 November 1890 and later Sergeant on 6 April 1893 he was discharged on 28 October 1896.
