M.M. London Gazette 9 December 1916.
James Wright was born in 1892 at Fenton, Staffordshire and was a miner upon his enlistment on 1 September 1914. Wright served in France with the 8th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment from 27 August 1915. Given 28 days field punishment from 16 April 1916, he would have shared in the events of the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. His M.M. was awarded for the actions during that period, for he was awarded the riband of the M.M. by the General Officer Commanding the Division on 17 October 1916, the London Gazette following some two months later. It was not until April 1918 that the Medal itself was forwarded to the Mayor of Stoke-on-Trent for presentation, by which point Wright had also suffered gunshot wounds to his right leg; further entitled to 1914-15 Star Trio.
