Noel Maskelyne was born in Wandsworth and was a shipping clerk upon joining the Royal Flying Corps in 26 February 1917. He served in France with No. 15 Squadron from 11 December 1917.

Noel was born into a family of magicians who ran the Maskelyne's Theatre of Mystery in London. His younger brother Jasper was a famous magician, who during the Second World War served with the Royal Engineers before being recruited by MI9 to work in Cairo. This led to him working on camouflage and deception schemes in the Western Desert prior to the battle of El Alamein.
