The General Service Medal awarded to Niak P. Singh, Dogra Regiment, who won a superb M.M. at the Battle of Imphal
General Service 1918-62, 1 clasp, S. E. Asia 1945-46 (7873 Nk. Piar Singh, 1 Bn., Dogra R.), good very fine
[M.M.] London Gazette 27 July 1944, the original recommendation states: 'This N.C.O. was a section commander of 8 Pl. which was on patrol on night 2/3 apr. His Pl. encountered enemy in much larger numbers, and being attacked on three sides, had to break off the action to avoid encirclement L/Niak Piar Singh commanded the L.M.G. and three sepoys detailed to cover the withdrawal. The enemy followed up closely but was held up by the excellent handling of the small rearguard, which took up successive positions and inflicted deterrent casualties, as was proved by examination the following day.
There is no doubt that the Pl. would not have been successfully extracted from a difficult position had it not been for the calm and steadfast manner in which the rear guard was commanded. Two days later on 4 apr. this N.C.O. was ordered to take part in an attack on a feature. As the Pl. was retreating [...], a party of enemy tried on three occasions to work round its flank. Each time L/Niak Piar Singh went forward alone and by hurling grenades, foiled each attempt. In the attack he led his men forward until stopped by heavy cross fire. He continued to control his section, moving from one exposed place to another, with no regard for his own safety, and coolly switching fire until ordered to withdraw, here he skilfully evacuated his wounded and got the rest of his section [...] under cover. Throughout these actions, L/Niak Piar Singh showed great courage and determination coupled with leadership of a very high order.'
