John Ainslie Aymer Grassie was born in 1896, the son of S. A. Grassie, of 16 Hartington Gardens, Edinburgh. Having served in the rank of the 9th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (No. 4344 & 331566), he served in France from 23 March 1916. Selected for Officer Training, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion, Black Watch on 18 November 1917. He was killed in action on 21 March 1918, the first day of the German Spring Offensive, Grassie, aged just 22, is commemorated upon the Pozieres Memorial; sold together with copied MIC and research.
