India General Service 1895-1908, 1 clasp, Relief of Chitral 1895 (3403 Lc. Corpl. S. Bailey 1st. Bn. E. Lanc. Regt.), post a little loose, very fine

Samuel Bailey was born at Burnley in March 1862 and was a weaver upon his joining the East Lancashire Regiment on 5 November 1880. Bailey served in India from 19 December 1893 - 28 June 1896 (Medal & clasp), before serving in Burma until 17 December 1897. After a spell at home, he served in South Africa from 13 January 1900-25 June 1902 (Queen's Medal & 3 clasps, King's Medal & 2 clasps).

He was wounded 24 January, 1902 in the back and face whilst defending a blockhouse against attack near Dundas Farm Post, Gazetteer refers: "a farm in the Orange Free State (Frankfort district; Free State), 15 km east of Frankfort. The central camp for the men laying out the blockhouse line from Frankfort to Tafel Kop in December 1901 was based on the farm under the command of Brig-Gen E.O.F. Hamilton." Interestingly, only ten men have been positively identified as being wounded whilst defending a blockhouse.
Bailey was discharged on 4 November 1903.
