India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Samana 1891 (2779 Lce Corpl. W. Blain 2d. Bn. Manch. R.), suspension slack, good very fine

William Blain was born at Brampton, Cumbria in 1870. Enlisting as a Trooper with the Royal Horse Guards on 9 October 1889, perhaps the cavalry was not to his liking as he transferred to the Manchester Regiment on 11 January 1890. Posted to the 1st Battalion on 21 February 1890 and appointed Lance-Corporal on 17 April, Blain was posted to India on 19 September 1890, serving with 2nd Battalion on the North-West Frontier and participating in the 1891 expedition against the Miranzai in the Samana mountain range. Promoted Corporal on 10 April 1892 and further advanced Sergeant on 16 February 1895, Blain's tour of duty ended on 13 November 1898 and he was discharged at his own request on 7 February 1899.
