William Nelson was born at Leeds in 1873 and enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders at Leeds on 10 October 1891. He saw active service in India from 27 January 1893, including at the Relief of Chitral in 1895 (Medal & clasp), before going to Crete in March 1897 and Sudan in January 1898 (Queen's Medal, Khedive's Medal). Nelson also served in South Africa during the Boer War from 2 March 1900-2 September 1902, being discharged on 8 May 1903. Upon the outbreak of the Great War, he re-enlisted at Leeds on 22 December 1914 and served with his old Regiment in France from 27 January 1915, being demobilised on 16 March 1919.
