Harry Dewhirst joined the West Riding Regiment in June 1885 and served at Bermuda, Halifax (Nova Scotia), St Helena and Natal. During the Boer War he was severely wounded in the lungs at Paardeberg on 18 February 1900, when the Regiment lost 22 killed in action and 99 wounded. Having been discharged with his L.S. & G.C., he re-joined in September 1914 and served with the 10th Battalion in France from 26 August 1915. Demobilised in January 1919, he died on 28 December 1928 at 43 Pendragon Lane, Bradford; sold together with extract from The Iron Duke which featured his obituary in June 1929.
