Three: Private G. Gunner, Royal Marines, late 9th Lancers

Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, 2 clasps, Relief of Ladysmith, Orange Free State (3557 Pte. G. Gunner. 9th Lancers.); British and Victory Medals (DEAL 14333 -S- Pte. G. Gunner. R.M.), good very fine (3)

George Gunner was born at Putney on 25 March 1877. He served with the 9th Lancers from 18 January 1893. He served in South Africa from 14 October 1899-12 May 1900. It appears he is further entitled to the 'Natal' clasp, with 160 awarded to the Regiment. Coming from India in three ships, the Wardha got caught in a violent storm that killed 83 horses, nine mules and a bullock. The ships steering gear was damaged and they had put into Durban where they were put aboard other ships and sent to the Cape.

Married in 1904., by 1911 he was living in Cheriton, Kent with three children and was a canteen waiter.

In April 1918, Gunner volunteered for the Royal Marine Labour Corps. Founded in 1917, the unit took those aged 41 or over who were unfit for front line service. Gunner worked in the docks at Le Havre and Honfleur, during which time he broke a toe and had a thumb crushed by a beam. He was discharged in March 1919 (British War and Victory Medals).
