George Gould Weitzmann was born on Jamaica in 1880, the son of a Brazilian-born merchant (Gustav H.) and a British mother (Sarah M. Weitzmann). He served during the Boer War with the Cape Mounted Rifles and latterly was commissioned into the North Staffordshire Regiment. He changed his surname to 'Walsh' at some point and earned a 1914-15 Star Trio with the Army Service Corps and the Indian Army Reserve of Officers during the Great War, the M.I.C. also noting the award of the O.B.E. and his awards to be sent to the Mercantile Bank of India, Calcutta.
